Mesh has finally come to Inworldz!
Mesh is completely new for me, I had worn it in SL, but didn’t really know that much about it. Now I am learning super fast! lol. There is so much that goes into it, I don’t just mean the creating, its all the rigging & weighting you have to learn. I began a few months back learning Blender… boy is that an experience! I am comfortable with the interface now & I keep a handy list around for reference. I made a couple of simple skirts, which I had thought were correct they were nothing special, but I had created them. I uploaded these to Inworldz when Mesh was activated & although they moved with my Avatar it was clear that they did not deform as they were supposed to do with the deformer having been added to the IWv2 Viewer. I tried several ways, I didn’t even know if I was uploading them correctly. Then I came across some free meshes, I uploaded a few, still the same they just were not deforming. A friend then took a look at them & uploaded them to see what was going on… apparently they were old files & the rigging was off slightly & that was why they did not deform.
Luckily I was able to open them in Blender 2.67 & I began to re rig them, following the tutorials I had been using to learn how to make mesh clothing. I uploaded the newly rigged files & hey presto… they worked with the deformer… hurray! I thought, but oh… why are they distorting the new textures I had made, they hadn’t done that before… and here is where I quickly had to learn all about weighting.. until I get that right I wouldn’t even begin to release them.
It is a trial & error which is how I learnt to do all I can do anyway.
Right now I am trying out different ways to weight the mesh so that they move perfectly on the avatar without breaking or distorting my textures. Texturing them is really quite simple, a lot easier than texturing a sculptie I have found. I am enjoying learning this new skill, I just had not realised how much work was involved… no wonder they charge so much for Mesh content in SL. It certainly makes you appreciate the expense once you know exactly what is involved behind every item of mesh clothing.
There is good Mesh & bad mesh & I want to only make good Mesh, so Watch this space 😉
